What to Do When Your Child is Failing in School?
Whether due to boredom, laziness, or fear, children who fail in school ruin their chances of improving their quality of life as adults.
Many, who are failing in school, will most likely, linger in a constant state of Poverty.
However, parents who care about the success of their children are willing to move heaven and earth to guide them toward excellence. Strategies may vary, but a few effective approaches can work wonders in a child’s motivation to learn.
The following approaches have been proving successful repeatedly.
Provide IncentivesYou may have heard in schools how teachers use incentives to get their students to perform positively in the classroom. Some of the best classes excel academically vial teachers who are incentive oriented. Whether tangible or intangible, students want to feel like they are working for something valuable.
My teacher experience has taught me that children delight in incentives and rewards. Many parents know this but simply do not implement it in the home. They believe that providing food and shelter and a few fun activities is all that it takes to keep children happy and motivated.
But getting a child to appreciate learning takes more than that. Offer incentives that your child craves day and day out.
For example, do you child dream of receiving some unique gaming device, or a state-of-the-art electric scooter. You can offer one these incentives as a long-term goal. You can guarantee he or she will receive it at the end of a semester if the report card meets your expectations.
Incentives can be the guiding light to your child’s pursuit of excellence.
Provide TutoringA good home-based tutor can work wonders in motivating your child to overcome the sense of failure in school. Many times, the reason a child fails in school is he or she simply do not understand how to do the work.
Many students need one on one. This is when a qualified tutor comes into play. By qualified, I do not mean that the tutor should hold a master’s degree or higher. A good tutor is more of a passionate person who knows the basics exceptionally well and is contagious enough to inspire the student to see the value in themselves as well as their education.
When I was a student in elementary school, my tutors were particularly family members who would not accept my self-doubt as an obstacle. Their passion, patience, and commitment to my success rubbed off on me.
Embrace Hybrid LearningIf you desire to play a pivotal role in your child education, why not embrace hybrid learning. Share in your child’s education.
The unique thing about hybrid learning is that you can monitor more effectively how your child is performing in school and at home. You and the teacher work together to see that the child really understands that both you and the teacher cares about their academic success.
To embrace hybrid learning you should be equipped with the knowledge and teaching abilities to provide a quality education as would a traditional teacher. You must be able to present lessons relevant to district expectations, assess learning progress, and close any achievement gaps in your child’s academics.
Implement Discipline PlanSome kids need it. When they enter the classroom, the idea of playing in on their mind. They annoy the teacher as well as classmates who are eager to learn.
Taking away privileges, denying fun activities, and giving parental lectures that add to their misery are some of the methods you can use to get them to take school seriously.
As a child, I never like to stay in my room while my friends were out playing on a bright Saturday morning. I did not like staying at home while be siblings went to the local park and bought ice cream sandwiches when the truck came around with that all familiar bells.
Believe me, old fashioned discipline still works.
Enroll Kid in CounselingSometimes children fail in school due to no fault of their own. In a world filled with traumatic incidents and events that may have affected their lives, children may find it difficult to perform in school.
Studies show that students whose parents have gone through divorce or those who have lost a mother or father do not do well academically. Their classroom performance decline drastically.
No other means are more effective then enrolling such children in counselling. A parent can either consult school counseling or outside counselling for the child.
In one of my second grade classrooms, I had a student who had witnessed the death of her mother as a little toddler. There were times when she would fall asleep in class and wake up screaming hysterically, as if she relieved the moment over in her dreams.
Never rule out counselling as a solution if your child in failing in school.
The Danger of Parental IndifferenceAs parents many times we are indifference to our child academic progress. If he or she is failing in school, we may believe that one day he or she will catch on and it will all be fine. But to think like that is a mistake.
Teachers are not the only one responsible for a child’s education. Parents are equally obligated to play a pivotal role in their children academic progress. A failure to do so will only teach your child that education is only valuable when it comes to the classroom, not at home.
Education is valuable both at school and at home. Every child should know this.
