Supercell made $1.90 billion in revenue in 2022; CEO reveals 5 new games in development

In its annual blog, Supercell has put out some of its revenue statistics along with the current progress and the new games that are in development. The CEO of Supercell Games, Ilkka Paananen, has revealed that the company has made $1.90 billion (€1.77 billion) in terms of revenue for the year 2022. Along with it, a few more topics have been touched on, which we will be discussing here.

The revenue sees a slight dip compared to the previous year

As mentioned earlier, Supercell’s 2022 revenue is $1.90 billion. It might still be a whopping amount, but Ilkka has confirmed that the revenue dipped by 6% compared to FY2021. The EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization) is $678 million (€632 million), which gets a heavier reduction of 14%. A total of $141 million (€132 million) was paid for corporate taxes alone.

The removal of games from Russia and Belarus as a result of consistent sanctions imposed by the EU and Western countries was one of the reasons for the financial hit. The mobile market too saw an overall decline of 6.5% according to Newzoo, so that didn’t help either. In terms of individual title revenues, Clash of Clans has generated over $10 billion in lifetime revenue, while Hay Day has exceeded $2 billion.

More games are in development as progress continues

In Supercell’s major and biggest studio, five more games are being developed. Squad Busters is one of them, which is now in closed beta. A couple of years ago, they announced three titles in development, out of which one has been stopped. The rest of the games have not been revealed yet.

The desire to release new games was also mentioned in the blog, as the team reminded themselves of their most recent yet so long-back release, Brawl Stars, which was released on December 12, 2018. This may change in the near future, as they intend to improve and expand their internal engine, possibly good enough to compete with third-party engines.

Supercell’s financial strength positions the company to make large investments in the future and to truly think long-term. Supercell has promised to continue to work better this year, thanks to a diverse team environment and investment in new studios, and we all hope they will.
